Who is eligible to work at Feinberg Library?

Full-time, registered, matriculated, students are eligible for employment at Feinberg Library. Students are employed through the Federal Work Study Program and SUNY Plattsburgh’s temporary service programs.

We are the largest campus employer of students, and many of those are work-study students. So, if you qualify for a work-study award, please consider accepting it. Your work-study status has no impact on your pay rate or hours.

Preference will be given to undergraduate students and those available for more shifts.

What positions are available?

Job Description: The library assistant position is responsible for providing services at the Feinberg Computer Lab and adjoining computer facilities. Students are responsible for some data collection including population counts and types of reference questions, monitoring facilities, reshelving library materials, answering patron questions, helping patrons locate books or other materials (on as needed basis), cleaning computers and other materials, assisting with library exhibits (on an as needed basis), and communicating problems to library supervisors when they arise. The library associate job is an internally promoted position for individuals with experience and demonstrated leadership qualities.

Experience Required: keyboarding, computer literacy, exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills, strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Must be willing to commit to working a full semester. Opportunities for advancement. Previous experience in a library, restaurant or retail store desirable.

Hours: Monday – Thursday from 8 a.m. – midnight; Friday from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Sunday from noon to midnight.

Job Duties:

  • Process daily incoming physical items (books, DVDs CDs)
  • Check items in and out to patrons; material from other institutions, and shelve behind the second-floor service desk.
  • Sends out books via land courier and UPS in appropriate shipping (labels, bubble wrap, boxes, land bags).
  • Has supervisor check all labels before sending books out to reduce errors.
  • Pulls books in the stacks in Feinberg Library for patrons borrowing from other institutions.
  • Scans articles using Bookeye Scanner and Microfilm/Microfiche machines.
  • Brings lending books that are outside of the U.S. to send out through our Campus Mail Center.
  • Returns Special Collections loans.
  • Opens received packages and gives returned loans to supervisor.

Experience Required: Library experience preferred. Committed to excellent customer service. Attention to detail; good communication skills; computer literacy a plus; excellent keyboarding. Must commit to a full semester, including exam week.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
