Basic Simple Guidelines

Provide students with the smallest proportion of copyrighted materials that will fill the educational need (if a 10 page excerpt will do, provide that rather than copy the entire chapter)
Take advantage of library e-reserves and electronic linking so that students can access materials on their own
Use original materials in their original formats as much as possible (circulate or have students take turns with novels or DVD's rather than distribute copies)
One-time spontaneous educational use with no profit impact to the copyright holder is almost always fair use
Repeated and planned use (of more than 10 % of a protected work, or of the critical portion of a protected work) generally requires permission of the copyright holder
