Background Information gives you an introduction to a topic, issue, or person. For instance, if you need background information on "Standards for Student Learning," an encyclopedia can provide you with a helpful overview of the topic.  

Encyclopedias are a good place to start to find overviews, significant names in the field, and citations to basic sources in the field.

In addition to Wikipedia (which covers all topics, but can be uneven), you can find specific information in subject encyclopedias online.
