Although much research has been conducted on veteran-students, much of that work has focused on issues such as veterans’ finances or academic achievement, rather than the individuals’ transitions from deployment to student life

The article looks at how more U.S. colleges are recognizing veterans as a unique demographic group in need of specific student services while the government has offered more guidance on how schools can support such individuals. Severely injured military veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan who are completing rehabilitation at a military hospital and are ready to pursue postsecondary instruction are assisted by an academic advisor at the hospital and a mentor from a cooperating college or university

Twenty-five students who served in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars were interviewed. The findings suggest that combat veterans are a student population with special needs and require support from both policymakers and program providers

An increasing number of veterans and military students are seeking to complete degrees online and through enrollment at campuses across the nation. Their increased numbers present some unique challenges and opportunities. Post 9/11, Chapter 33 GI Bill funding is enticing more institutions to look at the veteran and military population as a critical recruitment population. Successful management of these students requires institutional responses that many consider transformational. Failure to understand the needs of these students is likely to result in an unsuccessful experience for both the student and the institution of higher education. The following introduces the concept of a “military friendly” institution and outlines practices engaged by Western Carolina University supporting the concept.
