Interlibrary loan aka ILL, is a service where libraries request and borrow physical and electronic library resources from each other. For distance students who are not near the institution, it is the service that provides access to materials from the home institution's collection as well as other libraries. Sharing collections also means returning materials in a timely manner. Many libraries will allow one renewal, but it is at their discretion. Overdue materials may include fines and replacement fees assessed by the lending library that you will be held responsible for paying.
Registration:
The first time you use this service, you'll be asked to fill out a form with your contact information and the best way to reach you. On the form be sure in the Status field to select Distance Education Student. Remember to update as needed.
For physical materials:
When you fill out the request form for an item in physical format (books, dvds, etc) be sure to include in the Comments Box that you are a distance education student so you are not expected to pick it up at the Feinberg Library and mailers are provided! The item will be mailed to the address you listed on the form. Books, DVDs, etc must be returned before the due date. A return mailer and instructions will be provided with the item.
Tip: Order early (items may take from 1 to 3 weeks).
For articles:
If you want an article in a database that is not full-text, click the Request on InterLibrary Loan button. You'll get an email notification when the article arrives and it will give you instructions on how to access the article. The article will be held in your account for 30 days, so make sure to print or save it!
