Collection Guides

The Addoms Family Papers encompass the years 1763 through 1872. During this time period, three generations of the family conducted business, wrote to one another and about each other in letters and diaries, and also recorded their observations and feelings in journals and in school compositions.

The Asa Adgate Family Papers is a collection of materials dealing primarily with Asa Adgate, and includes deeds, correspondence, and other legal documents.

This collection consists primarily of personal and professional correspondence. Several of the letters are to Daniel Whitney Adgate and Effie from William G. Distin, an old friend and architect from Saranac Lake.

The Adgate-Knowles Collection consists mainly of correspondence between members of the Adgate and Knowles families concerning family affairs and other people and events in their respective communities. There are several letters between Hannibal F. Knowles and his wife Sarah E. (Clark) Knowles along with numerous letters from their son Julius James Knowles.
Julia F. (Adgate) Knowles and her sister Eunice B. Adgate also corresponded frequently.
Additionally, the collection includes business related letters to and from Asa Adgate and genealogical records on the Adgate, Knowles and Hyde families, including bible records, family group sheets and compiled genealogies.

Ninety-six items comprise the collection and primarily cover personal and family matters. There are, however, four items relating to Asa Adgate's brief congressional career. One of these documents describes the pension claim issued by Captain Levi Frisbie. According to the document, Captain Frisbie “lost a leg in the service at Plattsburgh." Other documents of interest include an essay on religion written by Matthew Adgate in 1816 and printed in Plattsburgh by Azariah Flagg; directories for the Fourteenth Congress; two essays written by Anna Arthur in 1857; and cards used by Asa Arthur to attend medical lectures.

The Adirondack Wind Ensemble Collection consists of concert programs, posters, and publicity materials from 2002-.
The items are housed in one oversize box and are arranged chronologically by date.

This collection includes 129 photographs, spanning 1939-2006, some of which are from 1950-1970 ACS yearbooks. A variety of documents, including graduating class lists from 1939-1970, school songs, and the 1907 Northern Adirondack Central School proposal are also in the collection. Twenty VHS tapes hold the recorded interviews from former students who attended ACS between 1939 and 1970.

The Arnold Family Papers consists of twelve items, and includes an autograph album owned by Edith Arnold, teachers’ certificates for E. Stephan Arnold, Plattsburgh High School graduation programs, an 1887 almanac, and an invitation to the centennial celebration of the Battle of Plattsburgh.

The Baker Family Papers consists of seven items: three commissions for John Baker in the New York State Militia; other papers pertaining to him, James Baker, and Sally Baker; and a book of prayers by Benjamin Jenks.

This collection comprises miscellaneous papers involving early residents of the Peru and Ausable area of Clinton County, including the George Heyworth family, George Green, John Green, William Kirby, Jacob White, Elkanah Watson, and others. Included in the collection are accounts, deeds, a bond, minutes of school district meetings, minutes of the Union Mutual Improvement Society, a script of a W.C.T.U. speech, an autograph album, calling cards and pamphlets from a Saratoga bathhouse, and other papers.

The collection consists of 93 photocopied pages of a day book kept by Robert Battey, a merchant, in West Harkness, Town of Peru, from 1821-1823 and by Battey and Ketchum from 1824-1827.

The collection consists of two ledger/journal books and include financial records and meeting minutes of School District #1 in the Town of Beekmantown from 1849-1954.

Much of the collection concerns the Chazy Central Rural School, correspondence, curriculum, newspaper clippings, faculty list, curriculum and a sketch of George R. Mott, dean of the school from 1916-1918. Also included are items for Heart’s Delight Farm.

The collection includes primary records of congregation membership, events, services, and activities. Of note are materials related to the history of the congregation’s synagogue, including the construction of the temple in 1969-1970. As well, meeting minutes of the B’nai B’rith Joel Lodge 118 from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and of the Beth Israel Sisterhood from the 1920s to 1965, offer special insight into the activities of these organizations. Administrative and operational reports of many kinds are especially detailed in the Board Presidents’ notebooks (1970s-1990s), the Temple Board meeting minutes (1940s-1990s), and compilations of Board of Trustees documents (2000-2011). More than 100 photographs document a variety of congregation events, as well as preserving images of the early temples in Plattsburgh. The collection also includes a variety of books that were utilized by congregation members, including prayer books, hymnals, Haggadahs, and children’s books, some of which are in Hebrew.

The collection consists of items related to David Broadwell (1748-1816) and his son David Benton Broadwell (1795-1871). These include receipts from David Benton Broadwell’s lumber business, legal documents from the time when David Benton Broadwell was justice of the peace, correspondence, a ledger, photographs, and a genealogy of two sons of Baxter Broadwell.

The Lucas Broder Collection contains eight letters that were sent from Ireland to members of the Broder Family in Canada. Most of the letters were received by Frederick Broder. He was born in the parish Killfree, County Sligo. Ireland. He married Sarah Henderson who was a native of Mullinacre, County Cavan, Ireland. Frederick and Sarah were the great grandparents of Lucas Broder. Frederick’s bother, William Broder is also a recipient and writer of a couple of the letters. Frederick and William’s mother, Jane Broder, wrote many of the letters.

The George Brown Justice of the Peace and Other Records encompass the years 1832-1879. The collection is comprised of six folders and includes account documents, letters, court summons and a ledger book produced during Brown’s work as Justice of the Peace in the town of Crown Point, NY.

The collection consists of thirty-three items, including agreements and deeds of persons residing in Lewis, Essex, and Easton, Essex County, NY., advertising broadsides and leaflets, Clinton County court orders, and miscellaneous receipts and invoices.

William C. Casey ran a store in the Parmeter Building in Altona, NY from 1905-1924. The building previously housed the store of John Hanley who moved to Altona around 1840-1845. The collection consists of one store ledger, 1905-1924.

Champlain College opened on September 23, 1946, on the site of the former Plattsburgh Barracks. It was one of three colleges chartered under the Associated Colleges of Upper New York (ACUNY) to accommodate returning Second World War veterans. This collection includes materials from Champlain College and Mohawk College and is housed in three archival boxes.

The Chazy, NY School District Records collection consists of two volumes of minutes of the annual meetings of School District No. 2 from 1811-1910. Included in the records are hiring of teachers, expenses for running the school, district boundaries and other school business.

The Cheever Iron Ore Company began as the Cheever Ore Bed Company in the 1850s by a corporation composed of Benjamin T. Reed, Samuel Hooker, R. W. Hooper, Joseph Tuckerman, and Lucius Tuckerman. The Cheever mines were located in the Town of Moriah, Essex County, just north of Port Henry, NY and much of the ore was sold to the furnaces in that village. The Cheever Iron Ore Co. Papers consists of two items that are from the time period when the company was the Cheever Ore Bed Co. The letter copy book of O. S. Presbrey contains business correspondence of the Cheever Ore Bed Co., of Presbrey after he purchased the land, and works of the company. Also included is Presbery’s personal correspondence with family and friends.

The Clinton County, NY Board of Supervisors Proceedings consists of one ledger that contains the meeting minutes of the Clinton County Board of Supervisors for 1829-1843.

This collection consists of material dealing with the description, sale, ownership, and construction of certain parcels of land in Plattsburgh and Clinton County, primarily in the 19th century. The materials in the first folder concern an 1824 ejectment suit brought by William Atwood against the Platt family over a property in Point Au Roche. Folder six contains photographs and negatives of downtown Plattsburgh locations. Several prominent area figures are represented, including Nathaniel Platt, William Bailey, Pliny Moore, Benjamin Mooers, Smith M. Weed, William Atwood, H. K. Averill, and H. K. Averill, Jr.

The records of the three Clintonville iron works companies include memoranda, letters, reports, certificates of organization and incorporation; legal papers pertaining to land conveyances, bonds, and wills; invoices and contracts for materials, supplies, labor and construction; land maps; and furnace, charcoal kiln, and iron mine section drawings. Includes Collections 64.3, 65.5, and 65.10

The collection centers around the Alonzo Collins family. It includes correspondence, business papers of various members of the Collins and Addoms families, and deeds and mortgages relating to Clinton and St. Lawrence counties.

The collection includes a variety of ledgers and documents that reflect the range of business ventures with which Filmore J. Columbe was involved between 1886 and 1928. These include six sales accounting books and approximately 85 receipts and other individual items related to Columbe’s businesses and two account books that pertain to Columbe’s serving as executor for the estates of John Baby, George Peltier, and Celina Tulipp.

The collection consists of ten photocopied items: seven letters written to Conners from Benjamin
F. Feinberg, two letters to a Mr. Hanley from Irving Batcheller and a group of historical writings
by Frank Conners.

Some features of the collection include original correspondence between Mr. Cotter and his business partners and other John Brown historians (most notably with Dr. Gee) as well as letters written by John and Mary (2nd wife) Brown to their family, friends, neighbors and business partners. Other materials housed include John Brown family genealogical records and newspaper clippings concerning the visit of John Brown’s descendants to the farm in the 1990s. In the collection are also deeds and records pertaining to the land grants at Timbuctoo that were intended to be used to form a black community in the Lake Placid area, the impetus for Brown to settle in northern New York. Some of the photographs in the collection document the mass gravesite of Brown’s followers, Brown’s gravestone and memorial at North Elba, and the Brown family and home.

The collection consists of seven scrapbooks dated 1913-1973. The scrapbooks contain
newspaper clippings, flyers, and pamphlets dealing with the activities of the Saranac Chapter.

The Darius Davis collection encompasses the years 1808-1836. These records give insight into the life of a mechanic/tanner. The record book kept by the Davises details contra/trade accounts of the tannery business.

The James Dean letters consist of ten letters spanning the period 1801-1817 and are primarily concerned with the sale of Dean’s land in several areas of Clinton County. They also include references to taxes and the economic situation of the North Country, and provide sometimes lengthy commentary on the politics of the county from the Federalist viewpoint. Some of Dean’s tenants are also referenced in these letters: Abijah North, the brothers Cross, Benjamin Birdsall, William Bedlam Jr., Gotlep Peter, David Colver, and the brothers Darrow (Dean’s nephews).

This collection is composed of the papers of John Deming, Cora Putnam Hale, and Helen Cordelia Putnam.

This ledger includes monies received and paid out by the supervisor, audits, and minutes of a meeting between the supervisors and overseers of the towns of Clinton and Ellenburg for the division of proceeds collected by Clinton County before the Town of Clinton was separated from the Town of Ellenburg in 1845. Supervisors named in the ledger are: John W. Havens, James B. McLane, Joseph R. Emerson, Russell W. Ransom, and Joseph Hutchins.

The materials consist of Carl William Engelhart and Margaret Stevens Engelhart correspondence, diaries, biographical information (marriage license, diplomas, etc.), a few photographs (some from a play put on at the SUNY Plattsburgh), documents involving Carl's Fulbright trip to Austria in 1967, address books, news clippings concerning their local activities, and letters commemorating major milestones (retirement, birthdays, deaths). The highlights are letters between Carl and Margaret when one of their sons, Steven, was born prematurely in Florida in 1953; two diaries of their 1958 yearlong Fulbright stay in Germany (the scrapbook documents this trip); letters from their 1967-68 Fulbright year in Austria; three diaries of their 1984-85 trip to China (both taught at Nankai University in Tianjin); a nearly complete collection of their letters from China as well as many letters from their friends in Plattsburgh and elsewhere, 1984-85; letters from friends (including a batch with one of Carl’s young Chinese students who traveled to the United States to earn a Ph.D. and eventually settled here, 1990s; and Carl's diaries, 1974-2010.

The majority of the letters in this collection comprises seventy-seven written during the Civil War by James Henry Estes, his uncle, Shubael P. Merrill, and others.

This collection is comprised of materials gathered for many of Dr. Everest’s publications. Subjects include prohibition in northern New York, Clinton County and Plattsburgh history, Pioneer homes in Clinton County, the War of 1812 in the Champlain Valley; Dr. David Sherwood Kellogg; Henry Delord; Point au Fer, Pliny Moore, Alexander Macomb, the Canadian Refugee Tract in Clinton County, and other topics.

This collection is a rich source of primary source material on the history of the Peru and Keeseville area. Many early manuscripts and printed items deal with the genealogy of thirteen families, the bulk of which are about the Eells family. Also in this collection is information about the Everett Farm, the apple industry, Earl Everett’s involvement in the U.S. Government Volunteer Weather Observer Program, and several local churches and schools. Of note is an early record of the stone schoolhouse in Peru. There are 86 items (mostly letters) related to Daniel and Betsey Thew (See also the Thew Family Letters, Collection # 61.1). Letters home from Daniel’s children form the bulk of the correspondence. Western travels and participation in the Civil War are recurring topics. Kate Thew left correspondence, memorabilia, and some interesting notes on death and dying. Of possible interest in the final category, Miscellaneous, are several items. A very detailed map of Peru, 1903, was prepared as an aid to rural mail carriers and therefore shows all dwellings as well as public buildings. A folder marked: Judith Mills / Helen Mills Winslow, contains a letter detailing the poverty and hardship of a teacher’s life in the nineteenth century.

The papers of both Benjamin and Robert Feinberg provide detailed insight into the many aspects of being legislators and representatives. Both men kept and filed the wide range of intra-office memoranda, reports, pamphlets, and newspaper articles associated with the countless legislative issues with which they were personally involved.

The collection consists of papers and documents related to the Felton family, mainly Wallace H., his wife Minnie Aurora and their son Lymwood.
Included is compiled genealogical information on the Felton, Lyon, Herron, Bridges,
Weatherwax and related families. The legal papers in the collection consist mainly of deeds and mortgages from the later half of the 1800s. Material from the Woman’s Land Army and the American Red Cross showcase Minnie Aurora Felton’s activity in those organizations. Earlier items related to Lymwood Felton include school materials (diplomas, report cards, etc.) and certificates from the Order of DeMolay. Later material deals with his farm and work as a pulp wood broker.

The collection contains the records kept by Joan Fleury and other volunteers for the fundraising
activities, building, and maintenance of the Karen Fleury Memorial Bike Path.

This collection contains correspondence, business accounts, bills, receipts, contracts, and miscellaneous materials of several generations of the Freligh family between 1772 and 1906 with an emphasis on the years 1800-1852.

This collection contains Joseph Giraud’s will and estate settlement papers, Alexander H. Grant’s correspondence and receipts, settlement papers of the A. H. Grant estate, and Zephaniah C. Platt’s correspondence and estate settlement papers.

The Hagey Institute located on Bridge Street in Plattsburgh began in 1893 for the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction. The collection contains one ledger of the minutes of the New York Gold Company from 1894- 1896. Included are Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws, purchase agreements with the Hagey Company of Nebraska, and oaths by the doctors of the Hagey Institute to keep the formula used in treatment of their patients secret.

George Washington Hale owned two starch factories in the Town of Westville in Franklin County, NY. This collection consists of two account books for his starch factory business. Entries date from 1871-1880.

This collection covers many topics dealing mainly with the Malone and Franklin County, N.Y. area, including Post Offices, U. S. Civil War, War of 1812, Franklin County history, people, places, and events.

This collection consists of photographs, sheet music, and a scrapbook of local Plattsburgh and Normal School memorabilia, and newspaper clippings.

This is an edited transcription of letters written by Levi Havens to his brother Daniel
Havens and his brother's wife Clarinda Havens. They were written while he served as a
soldier fighting in the United States Civil War under General George G. Meade, and
later General Ulysses S. Grant, between August 1863 and March 1864.

A group from the Committee of the Hawkeye Property Owners Association came together to create the Hawkeye Conservationists, INC. “The purposes for which the Corporation is formed are as follows: To conduct activities which are exclusively charitable, literary, and educational within the meaning of Section 501©(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, as the same may be amended from time to time, including the advancement of public knowledge of the history and natural community resources of the Silver Lake area of Adirondack Park, the furnishing of rescue squad and insect control services to the public, the preservation and protection of all other activities as shall from time to time be found appropriate in connection with the foregoing and as are lawful for not-for-profit corporations.”

These papers include eleven mortgage indentures, a will, tax receipts, a diary, and a court record, all related to the Heyworth family of Peru, NY.

This collection consists of the original, a photocopy, and a partial transcript of the journal of William Gilliland (Willsborough Town Book) from 1765-1793. The journal contains a record of his daily activities (1765-1767), memoranda of business transactions, descriptions of his properties and copies of petitions and other documents. Also included are five deeds; three to William Gilliland, one from New York State to Zephaniah Platt, and one from Frederick Halsey to Charles Platt, and a map of the Lands of New Windsor that formerly belonged to John Alsop.

The material in these papers is personal correspondence concerning the Dr. Frank Hopkins family of Keeseville and the Reuben Stearns family of Parishville and Potsdam, invitations, photographs, deeds, and diaries. Of particular interest is a series of letters received by Dr. Hopkins from people he knew and worked with at Clinton Prison, which include both prisoners and employees.

The Collection contains a variety of items pertaining to Plattsburgh, the Howell Family, and their Witherill Hotel from 1882-1969. Included is correspondence, hotel registers, account books, and a wide assortment of ephemera, such as liquor licenses, photographs, brochures, newspaper clippings, and a collection of menus and wine lists from the Witherill and many other hotels. The bulk of the correspondence, which dates from 1882 to 1969, is between 1935 and 1955 and is primarily concerned with the Howell Weathervane Collection, housed in the Witherill Hotel, and with community efforts to attract military usage of the Plattsburgh Barracks.

These Papers include flyers, pamphlets, publications, correspondence, and
photographs documenting the musical performances and events organized by Charles and
George Hudson and works by Charles Hudson on paleontology, geology and teaching.

Junior Plattsburg was founded in 1917 as a private military training camp for 14-21-year-old students. U.S. military officers and West Point cadets conducted the training on the more than 500-acre camp located at Long Point on the shore of Lake Champlain, eight miles north of Plattsburgh.
The Junior Plattsburgh collection includes correspondence, business papers, court martial records, and student report cards.

This collection consists of correspondence among members of the Richard Keese, Jr. (1794- 1883) family, including the Hurlburt and Nelson families from 1832-1849. The letters concern mostly personal and family affairs and activities. There are occasional references to politics, cholera and yellow fever epidemics, a flood in New Orleans, ocean voyages between New York City and New Orleans, and other incidents or activities.

This collection includes Charles White Kellogg letterbooks and financial materials.

Dr. David Sherwood Kellogg had a prominent medical practice in Plattsburgh, several times acted as interim Post Surgeon at the Plattsburgh Barracks, was interested in local history, was the initiating force behind the establishment of the Plattsburgh Institute, and was a well-recognized authority on Native-American and military archaeological sites in the Champlain Valley region.
The collection includes Dr. Kellogg’s personal journals, medical and historical notes, his addresses on various subjects, his children's stories, his interviews with local citizens and veterans, genealogical information, local folklore and anecdotes, archaeological documentation and drawings, and family correspondence.

This collection includes Kellogg Family photographs and genealogy and ancestry information.

The Kent-Delord Collection is a collection of materials owned by the Kent-Delord House Museum in Plattsburgh. The collection consists of several thousand items and the range of materials is substantial, dating from the 1760s to the first quarter of the 1900s.

This collection consists of 11 letters written by various family members and friends of Mary Dorothy Langdon Commando between 1835 and 1874. It also includes transcriptions of ten of these letters.

The Collection consists of material collected and written by William J. Langlois and Robert McGowan, including taped interviews and transcripts of residents of Reynoldston, NY and Franklin County, NY. Included is genealogical and family history material on the Langlois, Reynolds, and other related families.

This is a small collection of genealogical and historical materials dealing with the Larkin, Griffith, Macamber, Mosher, Hoag, Vaughan, Warren, Robinson, and other related families of Clinton County and the Grand Isle, Vermont area. The collection deals mostly with the genealogical history of the area, but also includes significant coverage of local history.

The Lawrence-Webster Company was located in Malone, NY. These papers consist of one ledger book and one folder containing minutes of the Board of Directors and stockholders meetings and letters and documents concerning the liquidation of the company.

Warren Arthur Lee was a local historian and a member of the Crown Point Central School District Board of Education for 25 years. The collection contains financial and legal records, correspondence, meeting minutes, pamphlets, and attendance registers of the Crown Point School District from 1866-1949. Also included are voter registration lists for District 2 in the Town of Crown Point.

This collection consists of items relevant to the North Country and several local families from 1801 into the 20th century. The items include correspondence, business papers, genealogies, photographs, magazines, books, and other miscellaneous materials. The correspondence and genealogies deal with the Deming, Lobdell, Morgan, Platt, and Smith families, all of whom were interrelated by marriage. The genealogies trace the roots of some of these families back to the 17th century. The series of photographs (ca. 1895-1930) are of Plattsburgh landmarks, including the Hotel Champlain, the Plattsburgh Normal School, “Gunboat Rock” and others. There is also a photograph of an early balloon ascension and one of F. P. Lobdell’s Store.

In 1814 Macomb became brigadier general and was placed in command of the northern frontier bordering on Lake Champlain where he was in command of the forces during the Battle of Plattsburgh in September 1814 that defended the village against the British attack.
This collection includes seven letters (transcripts of the originals in the National Archives) written by Macomb to the War Department from August 31 to October 9, 1814. The correspondence reports on the advance of the British on Plattsburgh, preparations being made, the Battle of Plattsburgh itself, and estimates of damages to private property. Macomb gave descriptions of dress in some cases, death tolls on specific dates and at specific places, a list of principle officers of the British army, and a field report of the troops under his command.

The diary of Mary Elizabeth Collins, a young woman growing up in mid-Victorian Plattsburgh,
New York, begins with daily entries throughout 1884, then goes to entries every few days in 1885,
then every few weeks in 1886, concluding with every few months in 1887.

This collection consists of two items: the ledger of meeting minutes from 1852 (when the lodge was started) through 1871, and a membership register from 1862-1876. The register includes dates the members were admitted to the group and at which lodge they were initiated. It also includes age, place of birth, residence, and death date of some of the members.

These papers include Louis A. McKinney’s military papers; scrapbooks dealing with family and local history, news events, poems, and literary writings; and Birth Certificate stubs kept by Plattsburgh Dr. Jefferson Gardner McKinney from 1886- 1923.

The materials in this collection include Ralph W. Haff Peru, NY hardware business account books; an account book of an unidentified lawyer; and records of the Peru First Congregational Church Sabbath School where Emma Merrill’s aunt Eva was Secretary/Treasurer. The final item is a pictorial booklet of the World’s Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in 1893.

The collection of a photocopy of the Murry family history entitled “Descendants of Jonathan Murray of East Guilford, Connecticut.” It includes a brief history of the Murray clan in Scotland, several images of members of the family and a preface by William B. Murray describing the work.

The Northern New York Institution for Deaf-Mutes collection consists of twenty items. Included
are minutes of the Board of Trustees, correspondence with the State Comptroller concerning three liens on the property of the school, Executive Committee reports, annual reports to the State Legislature, photographs, scrapbooks and a printed historical sketch of the school.

The bulk of this collection spans the years 1823-1926, with most of the materials covering 1850-1880. The collection contains the early history of the railroad, business records and legal papers, documents dealing with the railroad’s 1864 reorganization, Fenian correspondence, and miscellaneous correspondence and items from other railroad lines.

This collection includes correspondence, printed works, a diary from 1866, and an account book from 1841 to 1844. Printed works include early newspapers, sheet music, and advertising materials. The correspondence deals with West Chazy, Mooers, and Altona. The collection is particularly strong in correspondence of the Civil War period and includes several Civil War letters (to and from residents of the West Chazy area) as well as letters to area residents from the western United States.

This collection includes financial records and meeting minutes for School District #9 and meeting minutes for School District #6.

These papers consist of two land patents, deeds, mortgages, bonds, one road warrant, a school tax list, the last will and testament of Jacob Southwell, and other documents. Most of these documents bear the name of Nathaniel H. Pierson, sometimes spelled Piersons, Person, and Persons.

These records consist of correspondence, purchase orders, receipts, government bid contracts, and inventory books. Much of the collection centers on the billing, bidding, and sales of wholesale foods to the Quartermaster of the Army at the Plattsburgh Barracks. One set of correspondence between the Plattsburgh Feed and Grocery Co. and M.W. Houck & Brother Food Brokers pertains to a shipment of California raisins being seized by The New York State Department of Agriculture in April of 1937. According to the correspondence the raisins were preserved with a chemical which proved to be harmful for consumption.

These papers include Board agendas and minutes, appeal applications, correspondence, maps, and public hearing notices for appeals.

The Plattsburgh, NY Town Court Records consists of 2 ledgers containing court records from the Town of Plattsburgh kept by Reuben H. Walworth from 1815-1822.

This collection contains materials produced by Plattsburgh Pride, Inc., a volunteer nonprofit organization, with the goal to “foster, promote and protect the community spirit of the residents of the city and to instill a sense of PRIDE in its citizenry for this community.” (Plattsburgh Alive, Vol. 1, no. 4, inside cover)

Dr. Pollard’s collection of archaeological papers contains materials relevant to all of his major research projects, including his studies of 19th century Plattsburgh bottles and Clinton Prison’s early association with the iron industry. Field notes, original maps and artifact drawings, slides and photographs, as well as some published resources and aerial photographs that aided in his field work, are included. The collection also contains the field notebooks of the students who participated in his summer field courses at the Rickert-Allen farm site in Peru, NY (1982), the Caldwell mine site at Clayburg (1984), and the four summers of excavations at the Clintonville forge site between 1994 and 2001. A set of the publications and papers that grew out of Dr. Pollard’s and his students’ research projects is also included in the collection.

This collection consists of a wide array family photos, documents, letters, and genealogical information related to the life, work, and families of Moses Joseph Rabideau, who was a contactor and builder in Plattsburgh, NY.

John Rider was born ca. 1804 and was a farmer in Peru, Clinton County, N.Y. where he lived with his wife Sally and four children, James, Wesley, John D. and Mary. This collection consists of one volume of his farm financial records and diary entries commenting on the weather, events, and activities from 1854-1867.

This collection contains deeds, business accounts, reports, contracts, bills, receipts, maps, correspondence, and miscellaneous materials concerning the J. and J. Rogers Iron Co. of AuSable Forks, N.Y., its reorganized offspring, the J. and J. Rogers Co., and its subsidiary the Alice Falls Co. The materials span the years between 1829 and 1971 and pertain primarily to the operations of this large iron, and later pulp and paper, manufacturing concern.

A major portion of this collection is comprised of more than 1100 photographs and negatives pertaining to the interrelated families of the Lansings, Prescotts, Millingtons, and Porters. Several early family albums and numerous snapshot photographs highlight family members and activities, and span almost one hundred years, from the 1860s to the 1960s. Depictions of Marjorie Lansing Porter (1891-1973) range from her early childhood to the later years of her life. Other materials offer additional insight into Marjorie Lansing Porter’s professional and personal life. These include letters to her when she served as editor of the Essex County Republican in Keeseville, as well as wide ranging correspondence to her in connection with her services to the public as Essex County Historian, Clinton County Historian, and City of Plattsburgh Historian. Another significant part of the collection pertains to Marjorie Lansing’s father, Charles Wendell Lansing, who served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War I from 1917 to 1919. Capt. Lansing compiled an impressive scrapbook of photographs, memoranda, letters, and war time ephemera that uniquely embodied his personal experiences and perspectives on what he titled “The Great Adventure.” In addition to this important work, the collection includes a number of manuscripts written by Charles Lansing concerning issues of international law, peace, and justice, as well as numerous newspaper articles that highlight his post-WWI work in civic and industrial planning and development.

This collection consists of Ross Family letters and their transcriptions, genealogies, and James Ross compositions.
One part of this collection are Civil War letters written by James Ross between August 1863 and May 1864. He was mustered into the 9th Regiment, New York State Militia as a private on July 7, 1863 in Plattsburgh. This regiment became part of the 83rd Regiment, New York Infantry, and in June 1864 the 83rd became part of the 97th Regiment, New York Infantry.

As indicated in the title, This collection contains materials related to two controversies in the town of Elleburg Depot: a Medical Waste Incinerator Controversy, 1989-1997, and a Groundwater Contamination Issue, 1988-2010. The collection donor, Cynthia Rowe, was involved in highlighting and fighting for the resolution of both issues.

The materials in this collection comprise more than 1000 court and legal documents of Daniel Safford, who served as Justice of the Peace for the towns of Essex and Westport in Essex County, New York, from 1843 to 1858. There is also a small number of legal documents related to court actions under the purview of prior Justices of the Peace for Essex County from 1829 to1842. The nature of the documents ranges widely, and includes named and dated court summons, jury summons, case transcripts, minutes in suits, judgements rendered, affidavits, testimonies, examinations, depositions, declarations, promissory notes, payment bonds, claims for damages, invoices and receipts, and, rarely, personal letters. Other documents reflect Daniel Safford’s role as a town trustee, in which he oversaw matters such as the creation of tax lists, teacher wages liability, and road repair and maintenance.

Hamilton A. Sanders ran a general store in Wadhams Mills, NY for several years and his daughter Martha appears to have taken over the business in 1866. The collection consists of six ledgers--four are from the Sanders general store in Wadhams Mills, and two are ledgers of expenditures kept by Sanders from 1884-1892. Ledger three contains records of an unidentified forge from 1849-1851.

This collection contains 32 letters exchanged among Asa and Joseph Sawyer family members of Keeseville and Cadyville, NY and New York City between 1835 and 1854.

This collection consists of photocopies of three ledgers of the Matthew Sax Store in Chazy Landing, NY from 1809-1833.

The Schuyler Falls Town Court Records consists of one ledger containing the court records kept by Mellville L. Reed for the dates 1886-1897.

This collection includes photocopies of both primary and secondary documents and publications used by David Curtis Skaggs during research for his book, Thomas Macdonough: Master of Command in the Early U.S. Navy. The collection also includes a few notes taken by the author as well as correspondence regarding some of the primary documents.

Kate Horton Smith was a member of Trinity Church in Plattsburgh and the Saranac Chapter D.A.R. This collection consists of three five-year diaries kept by Kate H. Smith from 1900-1904, 1915- 1919 and 1920-1924 while living in Plattsburgh, N.Y. She chronicled her daily life and many meetings of civic groups in the area.

Orville A. Smith was a farmer, a Willsboro, NY town auditor from 1880-1884, and was Willsboro town supervisor. This collection consists of one account book of produce sold and expenses for his farm for the years 1860-1884.

The Society of the Second War with Great Britain in the State of New York is also referred to as the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of New York. The collection contains records, publications, photographs, and correspondence related to this Society during the first four decades of the 20th century, including materials from the files of Henry Harmon Noble. Also included are materials regarding the lawsuit and the Supreme Court case between the General Society of the War of 1812 and the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of New York.
In addition, the collection includes a small number of records of the General Society of the War of 1812, the Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Society of the War of 1812 in the District of Columbia, and The Maryland Society of the War of 1812.

Gilead Sperry was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1808 and began practicing law in the Plattsburgh area. Gilead served as a captain in the militia during the War of 1812 with Major General Benjamin Mooers' division. Gilead's son George attended the Plattsburgh Academy until age 14, when he was sent to Keeseville to learn the millwright’s trade. Upon completing his apprenticeship he moved to Chambly, Quebec, Canada, moving with his wife and children back to Plattsburgh in 1856. Giving up his occupation as a millwright, George became a surveyor and served the Plattsburgh community as town assessor (1859), Commissioner of Highways (1869), and was a member of the fire department. The Sperry Family Papers contains two types of correspondence. The first consists of personal papers, such as letters from family members or friends, while the second type pertains to legal and business papers. These papers include official papers such as notification of appointments to certain positions and land holdings.

This is a small collection of correspondence and ephemera relating to the Stetson and Thew families in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries and is primarily comprised of personal information and local gossip. Major correspondents are Anna Thew, Helen Bedell, Kate (Stetson) Thew, and Kate's aunt, Mary Stetson. Family members lived in various regions of Clinton County, New York, and in New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, and Ohio.

George Stevenson was the eldest son of Dr. Miles Stevenson and Theodosia Goldsmith of Chazy, New York. The collection consists mostly of George’s journals, 1838 to 1840, 1842, and 1844, during which time he studied law and worked on his father's farm. Also included are typed transcripts of his journals and papers, undated essays, correspondence from 1848 to 1857, and miscellaneous items.

Frank W. Stowell was the son of Alexander and Mary (Stewart) Stowell of the hamlet of Chilson near Ticonderoga, Essex County, N.Y. He was a farmer and merchant, and at the age of twenty he started a small general store and was in the business for about fifty years. This collection is a group of invoices from several North Country stores to Frank W. Stowell.

The collection consists of 169 reports, dated from 1989-2018 and representing the research efforts of SUNY Plattsburgh students enrolled in Dr. James Lindgren’s undergraduate course, Introduction to Historic Preservation. The reports include the students’ research into a specific neighborhood history, the architectural style and status of houses and other buildings in that neighborhood, nearly all of which are in the city of Plattsburgh. Most provide historic and other details of three addresses within a chosen neighborhood. Included are a descriptive assessment of the neighborhood itself and summaries of a range of information about the structures at each address, including the type of construction, layout, remodeling, reuse, ownership history, and where relevant, historic significance. The reports are complemented by photographs taken on site by the students.

The Suburban Transportation Company was formed in Plattsburgh, NY in March 1913. The company began with one 42-passenger autobus that ran between Plattsburgh and Rouses Point via Beekmantown Corners, West Chazy, Sciota, Mooers Junction, and Champlain. A second bus was added a few weeks later and made one daily round trip between Plattsburgh and Elizabethtown via South Plattsburgh, Peru, Keeseville, Clintonville, Ausable Forks, Lower Jay, Upper Jay, and Keene. Special trips were added on Sundays to Ausable Chasm. The buses were equipped to carry both passengers and freight. The first trip by the company was on April 28, 1913, carrying merchants to Keeseville in the morning, and city and county officials to Champlain in the afternoon. The collection contains 1913-1914 Board of Directors meeting minutes, one cash ledger and one account book.

The Daniel Thew family of Peru was a large family whose members scattered over northern New York and several western states and territories. Four served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The bulk of the 349 letters were written by members of the family, and with few exceptions, were addressed to Daniel and/or Betsey Thew, his wife, and their daughter Kate. The letters describe family activities, sickness, etc., nineteenth- century life in Northern New York and Vermont, frontier life in the West, and the Civil War as experienced by four Union army soldiers.
